Indonesia strives to protect film intellectual property
By raising public awareness and bolstering legal enforcement, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Law and Human Rights Ministry has stated that it works to avoid infringement of film intellectual property.
Anggoro Dasananto, director of copyright and industrial design at DJKI, said, "We continue to assist Indonesian cinema by providing information sessions, working with film communities, and educating the public that the act of pirating films violates the law.”
By enforcing joint ministerial regulations between the Law and Human Rights Ministry and the Communication and Information Ministry, DJKI has also stepped up preventive measures against IP infringement.
"IP owners who find or suspect IP violations of their work can report to DJKI's Directorate of Investigation and Dispute Resolution for further legal processing," stated Dasananto.
He declared that if any sites are found to be infringing on the intellectual property of motion pictures, his side will make recommendations to the Communication and Information Ministry to have them shut down.
"The Copyright Law will soon be updated, and we will strengthen its digital substance," he said.
He said that with regard to royalties, the Copyright Law grants creators and copyright holders exclusive rights in terms of economic rights.
A list of work copyrights is one of the services offered by DJKI as part of its initiatives to support the welfare of filmmakers and other creators.
"The creators/rights holder can feel the benefits if the films have been registered with the DJKI," he stated.
Creators can benefit from the IP-based financing system through Government Regulation (PP) No. 24 of 2022, which implements Law No. 24 of 2019 respecting the Creative Economy.
The purpose of the publication of PP No. 24 of 2022 is to make it simpler for participants in the creative economy to find sources of funding from banks or other non-bank financial organizations.
Accordingly, he stated, "the government can provide adequate financing for actors in the creative economy, which will encourage them to continue to be creative."
