Amazon sues Nokia over cloud computing patents

July 30 (Reuters) - Amazon.com (AMZN.O) sued Nokia (NOKIA.HE) in Delaware federal court on Tuesday, accusing the Finnish telecom company of infringing a dozen Amazon patents related to cloud-computing technology.

Amazon said in the lawsuit that Nokia misused Amazon Web Services (AWS) technology related to cloud computing infrastructure, security and performance to bolster its own cloud offerings.

Nokia said in a statement that it would "review these matters and defend ourselves vigorously in court." An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment.

The complaint said that Amazon, which launched AWS in 2006, developed its "groundbreaking" cloud computing technology in the early 2000s. Amazon said that Nokia entered the cloud computing industry in 2020 after ending its mobile device business in 2014 to focus on other fields.

"It was Amazon that pioneered in the cloud, and now Nokia is using Amazon's patented cloud innovations without permission," the lawsuit said.

Seattle-based Amazon asked the court for an order blocking the alleged infringement and an unspecified amount of monetary damages.

Amazon's complaint follows ongoing patent lawsuits filed by Nokia against the tech giant in several countries last year over video streaming technology.

The case is Amazon Technologies Inc v. Nokia Corp, U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, No. 1:24-cv-00891.
