A U.S. appeals court has denied Samsung Electronics' request for a rehearing in a smartphone patent infringement case that awarded rival Apple US$548 million.

After Samsung had whittled the original damages in the case down from $930 million, the South Korean company had asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit for a rehearing to reduce the award by another $399 million. But last week the appeals court, without comment, denied Samsung's request for a rehearing.

The case stems from a 2011 patent infringement lawsuit brought by Apple, alleging Samsung infringed on several iPhone patents related to the design and packaging of the smartphone.

Samsung said it was disappointed with the appeals court's decision. "For decades, we have invested heavily in developing revolutionary innovations in the mobile industry and beyond," a spokeswoman said by email. "We are confident that our products do not infringe on Apple's design patents, and we will continue to take appropriate measures to protect our products and our intellectual property."
