Boston telehealth firm claims Dallas company stole its technology

American Well is suing a Dallas-based company for alleged patent infringement, the Boston-based remote doctor conferencing firm announced on June 8.

According to the lawsuit, American Well said it has operated for close to a decade, rolling out technologies that allow patients to remotely connect with doctors, such as through video conferencing.

The Boston company said in a lawsuit that Dallas-based Teladoc, which also connects patients with doctors using video conferencing or phone, is utilizing its technology.

The suit also claims that Teladoc is aware of the patents and is disregarding them.

American Well said that Teladoc has requested that the patent office review American Well’s patent. American Well hasn’t responded to the request and the Patent Trial and Appeals Board hasn’t decided whether to look at the patent, according to the lawsuit.

On its website, Teladoc said it was founded in 2002, prior to the 2006 founding of American Well, and maintains that it is the nation’s first and largest telehealth provider.

American Well has requested injunctive relief and treble damages.
